Roger Ebert is an institution. He has been writing about film far longer than I have been watching it. And it appears he has a great dislike for Transformers 2; like many of his fellow critics. So incensed was he by Transformers 2 that he felt compelled to write a [...] This may be the laziest big-budget movie I have ever seen. I cannot think of a film that did so little in so much running time; at two and a half hours we get no character development, no plot that makes any semblance of sense; just noise; lots and lots of [...] I read an article the other day that described Lilja 4-Ever as the bleakest film ever made. I cannot completely agree; I do not think this chap had seen Tim Roth’s The War Zone; but this certainly wasn’t the feel-good film of the year when it was released. [...] Funny Games divided critics upon its arrival. Some felt that it was a masterpiece of manipulation, while others derided the filmmaker for cruelly, well, playing funny games with them. [...] Redbelt is a cracking film from David Mamet. Utilising his tried and true method of mixing character studies with mystery, he spins the traditional fight movie on its head. [...]
Let’s just get this out of the way. Terminator Salvation is a major disappointment. Lacking coherence, narrative drive, and imagination, it relies heavily on special effects and explosions to provide anything resembling entertainment. [...] Religulous is directed by Larry Charles. He was one of the main staff writers on Seinfeld and, more recently, Curb Your Enthusiasm. However, if he were to drop dead tomorrow he would be remembered as the director of Borat. And his time spent on that film certainly influences this one.
It’s hilarious. Go see it! What, you want more? [...] Star Trek is a pocket of nostalgia wrapped in a blanket of kinetic energy. More a blockbuster with a dash of Star Trek than a full-blown Trekkie second coming, it has a little of something for any film-goer looking for some fast-paced fun. [...] |
